French Colonial House Plans

French colonial style gets it origins from the rural manor homes or chateaus built by the French nobles in the mid 1600s. French settlers in Louisiana and parts of Mississippi built stucco-sided, two story homes with expansive porches and narrow wooden pillars where tucked up under the roofline. Since most of the homes did not have interior halls the front porches became the passageways into the home. Balance and symmetry rule this formal style down to the windows and chimneys, at least in the original style. Defining features include steep, high, hipped roofs, balconies and porches with balustrades, rectangular doors set in arched opening and shutters. Second-story windows usually have a curved head that breaks through the cornice.
